As the elevator works its way from the underground lab to the desert surface, the woman with the red-painted lips speaks. "You understand what you have to do? I don't have to remind you how important this is."
The man beside her lets out a sigh and nods, "Yeah, yeah, I know. I'll get it done." He shakes his head. "What do I tell them if they want to know where I was since last night?"
The woman answers, "Let them draw their own conclusions. A couple of them got a text from you last night that you wouldn't be home, and if someone asks at the bar, Harry saw you flirting and leaving with some redhead."
He nods, "Yeah... that should work, I guess." A long pause and then, as the elevator opens, he speaks, "I don't like lying to them."
As they step into the sun, the woman shakes her head, "If they know, the whole thing could be ruined. It's hard, I know, but this is the only way." She pauses, takes his arm, and speaks a soft command. Their bodies shimmer and split and a moment later, they are in New Salem, standing near his car.
As he moves away from the woman, digging for his car keys, Bobby Drake shakes his head, "Fine. If this is what it takes to save them, I'll do it. I'll send you a message when I have something."
With a nod and another soft command, the woman is gone again, and the young man is left standing by his car. As he gets in his car, he speaks to himself. "I'll do what I have to, to protect everyone." The serious look on his face isn't what anyone would expect to see on Bobby Drake.
