Last night after the disturbance at the Maria Stark Foundation fundraiser members of the superhero team the Avengers, accompanied by students of the Avengers Academy, the school opened by Tony Stark to train future superheroes engaged Intergang and an unknown armed group at the behest of the NYPD. Sources in the NYPD report that the Avengers were in the process of putting down an armed dispute between these groups when a third group of costumed criminals attacked. This group calling itself the Dark Avengers believed to include Baron Helmet Zemo, Dr. Karla Sofen aka Moonstone, the assassin known as Bullseye and Emil Blonsky aka The Abomination. The motivation for the attack is unknown but each of these criminals has had past encounters with the Avengers.
After the battle, the NYPD S.W.A.T team contained the scene and detained as many as 52 suspects with various criminal affiliations more than half of whom had to be taken to hospital for treatment, two were declared dead at the scene. Among those arrested were Baron Zemo and Bullseye while Moonstone and the Abomination remain at large. The city reports the total damage done to the area numbers in the millions however a number of the damaged buildings were condemned and due for demolition.
The mayor's office has stated that they are grateful for the Avengers joining the NYPD in their stand against violent crime in the city. However mayoral candidates Norman Osborn and Justine Hammer did not share the current administration's view with Osborn calling the excesses of costumed heroes a 'disgrace' and called for greater accountability and Hammer quipped on the way to a fund raiser that 'At least when Spiderman fights the Sinister Six, all six of them go to jail'. Despite the criticism from our mayoral contenders the city's view of the Avengers remains positive... more on page 6
