Selina Kyle is known in many circles as the Gotham City socialite who champions herself for the protection of the species of big cats world-wide, having founded a foundation to fund the protection of them. She's also known to be quite the seductress, having been seen on the arm of some of the bigger-name men in the city, and also has the reputation of being a shrewd businesswoman.

Catwoman is considered to be one of the world's best thieves, known and hired for her ability to pull off jobs that many of her ilk are afraid to even attempt.

Background

Nature or Nurture? Environment or Upbringing? The fundamental question of how we develop into the people we become. Regardless of which side of the equation, Selina Kyle got the worst of all possibilities to work with. Born in Gotham City to an abusive father and an alcoholic mother, Selina often took the beating from her father meant for her younger sister, Magdaline, or even her mother. And eventually, the streets of Gotham claimed Selina’s parents. As the police and CPS arrived to take the girls, Selina hurriedly packed a few things and told Magdaline to go with them. They’d take care of her.

And like a stray cat, Selina ran off into the night.

The rest of her youth and teen years were spent on the streets of Gotham. Surviving. Doing what she needed to in order to survive. Her natural physical agility blossomed into picking pockets and finding her way to upper story building to break into for stealing, food, or just shelter. The streets of Gotham were her classroom and her playground. Climbing fie escapes lead to leaping between rooftops, which lead to full-on parkour. Sometimes she’d slip and have to visit a free clinic. Or find an empty building to curl ip in and nurse herself back to health.

Selina not only survived, she thrived.

Her crimes became more bold and daring. And higher profile. As the lanky teen became a a woman, she began targeting the elite of Gotham society. She ruled the night, taking what she wanted and going where she willed. Nobody could stop her.

Until Batman arrived.

In the Dark Knight, Selina found not just a foil, more than a rival, she found an equal. Perhaps the only man she would possibly admit to being better. He was a challenge. And slowly, their encounters went from him stopping her crimes or her escaping from his justice, to something different. They respected each other, and more. She started helping him protect Gotham. He became more open to her flirtations. The relationship deepend.

The cat found herself belled.

And Selina accepted this. Excerpt for the times she didn’t. She refused to be fully ‘tamed’ and would go on crime sprees. She'd meet with other thieves and perform elaborate heists. Her own heists in Gotham become more limited to stealing from crime bosses and the dregs of the underworld. She would go on jaunts across the world, stealing from the elite in Europe, Asia, and South America. But, no matter how long or how far she stayed, she always returned to Gotham. Picking up her life there like months had not gone by. Because some cats just can’t be fully tamed, and go where they will.

Personality

Selina is as mercurial as her namesake. She can go from cuddly and affectionate to claws out and hissing in the blink of an eye. While she mostly has her temper under control, things like the abuse of women or children get her riled up and looking for the perpetrator’s blood. Even if she is aligned with someone, she sets her own rules and limits for how the relationship works. She enjoys luxury, but neither does she want to get soft. Every so often, she’ll get an urge and travel the world on an international crime spree, returning to Gotham after weeks or months without a word. She loves shiny and sparkly things, and has a special attraction towards cat-themed art. She does have an evolving sense of justice, though, and tends to limit her felonious activities to striking against criminal figures and stealing their stuff; at least, while in Gotham.
